Thurisaz - The Pulse Of Mourning
Thurisaz is
a band that I like a lot and have been following for a long time. From their debut
in 2004 up to today they kept investing in themselves and so their 4th
Album can be called their opus Magnum. They have fans worldwide who brought
them to India & Turkey and they don’t turn their back on some experimentation
(see the Acoustic Cd earlier this year). But they can still put the level
somewhat higher and they do just that on “The Pulse Of Mourning”
With this 4th album Thurisaz returns to the sound of their debut without losing the soaked in experience. That debut that won over so many souls and still is considered a standard in Belgium when it comes to atmospheric metal still evokes my emotions after 11 years. The construction of the melodies, the emotional vocals, the supporting keyboards and vulnerable riffs never really disappeared. The last 2 albums where of a high standard and brought the band maturity as well as a n bunch of fans but they never got to the same “goosebumps moments” from the debut. The small shift towards doom metal and less Death metal made Thurisaz less accessible but certainly not worse. On “The Pulse of Mourning” they seem to have found the balance.
I’ll sum up the album in a few key sentences:
Powerful but modest. Controlled chaos without exaggeration. The synths are present but without too much mumbojumbo, Aggressive without being brutal.
They display their ability and it can be considered impressive cuz what these gentlemen awake within their audience is not a given for many bands and is a witness to knowledge and ability.
I just can’t stop talking about it… but you should listen to this album yourself for the many layers of this albums only reveal their secrets piece by piece without you even noticing it. The album grows on you and still immediately captivates you and this is coming from a band that has been in the scene for 18 years but still sounds refreshingly new. “The Pulse of Mourning is a well-chosen title and perfectly depicts what can be heard in al it’s facets.
