Ancient Rites - Laguz

Picture
I don't think Ancient rites really needs an introduction. They are after all a quite long-lived and controversial black metal band. In this review we will shy away from all the controversy that surrounds this band and just talk about the music.

Laguz is the follow up to Rubicon from 2006. So you can't really say that Ancient rites were in a hurry to get this record out. But the question that raises is: Did this long wait result in a good album.

I must admit that I quite like this record. All the songs are very symphonic and bombastic with lots of synths over the blackened metal. The basics of their music is still symphonic black metal but I also detect hints of dark metal (Under the sign of Laguz), heavy metal (Mind unconquered), folk (Fatum) and movie scores (Von Got Entfernt).

In fact the whole record reminds me of the symphonic, popular black metal from the end of the nineties and beginning of the 2000's like Cradle of filth, Dimmu Borgir and even Summoning in places.

All in all this is a very interesting slab of dark, atmospheric and symphonic black metal and a good addition to Ancient rites catalogue.
