A chat with Julie Colin from Ethernity
Hello Julie, Could You tell us a bit more about
Ethernity?
We are a progressive power metal band from Belgium founded in 2000 by the brothers Julien (keyboards) and Nicolas Spreutels (drums) and their cousin François Spreutels (bass). Thomas Henry (rhythm guitar) joined the band at the same time. I joined Ethernity in 2005 and Grégory Discenza (lead guitar) completed the band in 2007.
We learned music together in the same school and we recorded 4 demos between 2005 and 2010. And now, our debut album 'Obscure Illusions' is available since March, 20th.
And it turned out to be a hell of an album! You say you studied music together...how should we see that? Classical? rockschool?
Thank you for your nice words! It's a rock school from the Namur area called "Rock's Cool". You learn directly on your instrument without too much theory. The advantage is that you see fast results and you learn to play in a "band" situation right away! That's how the guys noticed me and asked me to join Ethernity!
That’s cool. So tell us something about the latest album, were did you record, and how do you feel about the endresult?
All the production of our album was made by ourselves. Nicolas (drums) and Julien (keyboards) produced it in their home studios. We've made this choice to have more time for the recordings and to work the way we wanted. It takes more time than recording in a professional studio but you can really pay attention to the details! We made it in several sessions during about 2 years. Then, we sent all the tracks to Simone Mularoni (DGM/Empyrios) who made the mix and mastering at Domination Studio in Italy. We're very proud of the endresult and we'll probably make the same choice for the second album.
The recording studios won't like what they hear, but that's evolution for them. Was Simone Mularoni an easy choice and for what reason?
You’re totally right about the recording studios but it was also for a budget reasons. We’ll see how it goes when the time will come to work on the next album!
We asked Simone because we love so much his work as well in DGM as well as a producer. We met him several times in Belgium during some of his shows and we talked about it. So, yes it was an easy choice! He likes and he plays the same style of music so he understood directly what we wanted for the sound. Now, we consider him like a friend. He's a great guy and it's a real pleasure to work with him!
What was your part lyricwise on the album and what are the lyrics about?
I don't write the lyrics. Jean-Pascal Spreutels (Spreutels again! ;-)) is the main lyrics writer. We explain him our ideas and the big picture we have in mind and he writes the lyrics. It's easier for him because he was an English teacher and a metal singer too! We have different things in our lyrics. First, most of the songs are in a dark mood, more like thriller and sci-fi movies with demons. But, we have also stories about more realistic facts such as the loss of a loved one or the errors of humanity (for example: ‘After All Has Turned to Pain’ and ‘Broken Memories’).
So you kinda have a Seventh member? What would be ethernity's ultimate wet dream? Do you have a plan laid out for the future? Or do you just take things as they come along?
I think Ethernity are not only limited to the 6 members/musicians of the band. We're supported by a couple of awesome persons who are in the shadow! And we consider them like Ethernity members too. It's a real team spirit!
For sure, Ethernity wants to share his music and his passion all over the world! LOL! We want to share the stage with all the big bands we listen to, like the other little bands, I think.
We have waited 15 years before releasing our debut album but now, we have a lot of ambition and we're preparing our second album!
Any "lifting of the veil" on that? (the 2nd album that is), and do you have any messages for our readers or some humanitarian speech or satan's verses?
I can't tell anything about it for the moment! Lol! I hope the readers will like our debut album. We worked hard and we're motivated to keep on playing some music and sharing it with all the people!
Alright, thx for the lovely chat! and keep up the good work!
Thank you too!
